Fairmont Joint Diploma Teacher elected by The College Board as AP Computer Science Exam Reader

In 2012, Ms. Lucy Liu, teacher at 21st Century International School, Fairmont’s first Joint Diploma Program partner school, was selected by The College Board as one of the sole teachers in China to be an AP Exam Reader. Ms. Liu has taught AP courses since 2009 when The College Board first offered its AP program in China. An exemplary teacher, Ms. Liu teacher computer science and other technology courses to students in Fairmont’s Joint Diploma Program in Beijing. Ms. Liu works closely with Fairmont administrators and Master Teachers, and recently completed a two-week educator training program at Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Southern California.

2012 Fairmont Joint Diploma Program AP Outcomes

Fairmont International Education officially recognizes and congratulates our Joint Diploma Program students at the Beijing 21st Century International School (B21CIS) for their 2012 AP pass rate of 91%. When B21CIS first joined with Fairmont they were one of a few schools in China who were providing AP courses to students since The College Board first offered its AP program in China in 2009. In partnering with Fairmont, B21CIS expanded their AP course offerings. Our partnership now offers AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Chinese, AP Computer Science A, and AP Economics. Student participation has gone up from 5 in 2009 to 61 in 2012. B21CIS and Fairmont experienced a 79% increase in exam takers since 2011 alone. In addition to its 91% pass rate for the 76 exams taken in 2012, The College Board also recognized four students as AP Scholars--an award reserved for students who have a passing score on three or more AP exams.

Congratulations Fairmont Preparatory Academy Class of 2012

The Fairmont International Education team congratulations the Fairmont Preparatory Academy Class of 2012 graduates for their accomplishments. With 100 percent of 158 seniors heading to college, this year's seniors have blazed a trail of academic excellence while demonstrating their global awareness and commitment to the community.

The nation's top colleges and universities acknowledged their merit by awarding the Class of 2012 with over $2.8 million in renewable funding and scholarships—an average of $17,722 per student per year. "Given the current economic climate where many colleges and universities are awarding less than in previous years, this amount in financial awards shows a serious commitment by colleges to attract Fairmont Preparatory Academy graduates," said Fairmont Preparatory Academy Headmaster Robert Mendoza.

Fairmont Preparatory Academy's approach to college counseling involves finding the best college fit for students, and discovering a college where each individual student will be inspired, challenged, successful, and prepared for his or her next goals. In accordance with its mission, Fairmont Preparatory Academy is extremely gratified that students are heading to colleges that best suit their unique goals and best prepare them for their future work and post-graduate studies. "Fairmont Preparatory Academy's class of 2012 gained admission to over 200 different colleges and universities in 32 states (and the District of Columbia), reflecting the diversity and excellence of this year's senior class," said Jonathan Dunn, one of four counselors at Fairmont Preparatory Academy dedicated to College Counseling for seniors. "The list includes a wide array of large public and private universities, outstanding small liberal arts colleges as well as some top schools of art, architecture and engineering. We are very proud of the accomplishments and college admissions of this year's graduates."

Portions of the Class of 2012 took full advantage of Fairmont Preparatory Academy's extensive International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs, programs that continue to expand at Fairmont Preparatory Academy in order to meet student interests and demand. Fairmont Preparatory Academy offers 21 AP courses and 24 IB courses. Sixteen percent of this year's graduating class is graduating with full IB diplomas or certificates. Eighteen percent of this year's graduating class earned the distinction of AP Scholar.

Others in the Class of 2012 took full advantage of Fairmont Preparatory Academy's award-winning fine and performing arts programs. This year's graduates boast admissions to some of the finest art conservatories in the country including the Rhode Island School of Design, the Pratt Institute, The School of Visual Arts, and Parsons School for Design.

The 158 members of the Class of 2012 were accomplished academicians; however, they further distinguished themselves by their globalism and by their dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. Over the course of four years of school-sponsored Travel Week excursions, seniors visited Spain and China in educational tourism programs and traveled as well to Fiji, Costa Rica, and New Orleans to volunteer in community service projects such as rebuilding schools, cooking with the elderly, and interacting with local children.

The Class of 2012 earned more volunteer service hours than any other class in Fairmont Preparatory Academy history. They completed 18,736 hours of community service through projects ranging from after-school tutoring to beach clean-up to raise funds for Japan's tsunami victims. Nearly one-fourth of Fairmont Preparatory Academy's graduating seniors served a minimum of 100 hours of community service in this year alone, and were recognized by the United States government with a Presidential Service Award.

Fairmont Preparatory Academy seniors graduated on Thursday, May 31 st at Pearson Park in Anaheim, California. The commencement ceremony included speeches and musical performances by the senior class along with remarks from Headmaster Robert Mendoza, and an honorary address by film critic Leonard Maltin.
